Policies/Grading
Safety:
Classroom safety is always paramount. This is discussed on the first day of school and continually emphasized throughout the school year. Students, no matter what grade level, must always be on their best behavior and avoid reckless actions, both in and out of the classroom. Art classrooms in particular have materials, tools, and supplies that could cause physical harm to students if not properly used. I pride myself on maintaining a safe learning environment for our students.
Behavior:
Students are expected to act appropriately in class, come each day with a good attitude, and actively contribute to the overall learning environment within the classroom. My passion is teaching art...not how teaching middle school students how to behave in the classroom.

Grading
Gradebook: Assignments/projects and their respective grades are posted on Gradebook for both parents and students to see. Parents and students, please regularly check for progress and any missing assignments and artwork.
Grading Policy: Grades for 2-D and 3-D art projects are determined by the Volusia County School District's visual arts rubrics (attached below). Grades for written work are determined by the ELA Rubric which is aligned with our language arts classes.

- All missing or incomplete work must be turned in prior to the last week of each grading period. Late or incomplete that is not turned in prior to the last week of each grading period will be recorded as an 'I'. Students will have 2 weeks at the start of the following quarter (or in the case of the 4th quarter they will have 2 weeks from the end of the grading term itself) to return any incomplete or missing assignments/projects or they will become recorded as a '0' - no exceptions except in the case of having an excused absence or absences.
- Artwork or assignments turned in after the due date may receive a minimum of 20% off or simply not be accepted (at my discretion - depending on the circumstance) on the one the assignment's final grade. Extra days will be provided based on the number of excused absences (however, please note I always provide my students with more than sufficient time to finish projects in the classroom).
- Letter grades are based on the following scale; 0-59.4 = F, 59.5-69.4 = D, 69.5-79.4=C, 79.5-89.4 = B, 89.5-100 = A.
- Extra credit is not provided - no exceptions (however, ALL students will have an opportunity to bring up a project grade by making modifications or resubmitting projects. Students need to have a discussion with me about what they specifically need to accomplish beforehand).
- Any student who has a 504 or IEP, will receive the necessary accommodations and/or modifications. Additionally, any student with a physical disability will receive the necessary accommodations and/or modifications to meet their own specific individual needs. Such accommodations and modifications may include, but not be limited to, extended time, smaller project size (i.e. less clay, half paper size, etc.), preferential seating, use of checklists, modified instruction, etc.
