3D1 Studio Art is a yearlong course that focuses on three-dimensional techniques and media such as, sculpture, ceramics, carving, and assemblage. This course will require students to continue examining and utilizing design principles and color theory within the creation and analysis of artwork. In addition, students can expect to have more art production time and to be given more complex art projects. In this course students can expect to learn and/or utilize the following:

3D1 Studio Art is a yearlong course that focuses on three-dimensional techniques and media such as, sculpture, ceramics, carving, and assemblage. Quarter 1
Project: Pottery Unit: Pinch Pot, slab bowls/plates, coil pots, Tiki style candle holders, animal sculptures, slabbed ornaments, etc.
Standard(s):
VA.68.S.1.1 Manipulate content, media, techniques, and processes to achieve communication with artistic intent.
Learning Target: Create a symmetrical pinch pot using the pinching method. Ensure that the walls of the pot are even and approximately 1/4 inch thick. The shape, size, and form should be based on the individual creativity and interest of each student. Glaze will be applied to each pot.
Additoinal Discussion/Resources: Introduction to ceramics, terms and techniques, and how ceramics have been used as a functional primitive tool.
Length: 1 quarter.
Quarter 2
Project: (Polynesian Candle Holder
Description: We will create candle holders based on the Polynesian style using the slab, coil and pinching methods.
Standard(s):
VA.68.F.1.1 Use non-traditional thinking and various techniques to create two-, three-, and/or four-dimensional artworks.
VA.68.S.3.1 Use two-dimensional or three-dimensional art materials and tools to understand the potential and limitations of each

VA.68.S.3.4 Demonstrate respect for copyright laws and intellectual property ownership when creating
Learning Target:
Create a functional free-standing candle holder that incorporates the Polynesian style into the design.
Criteria:
(1) Candle holders MUST be created using the slabbing technique. (2) They MUST be freestanding. (3) They MUST be approximately between 5 to 7 inches tall. (4) They MUST have a face and designs made by using coiling and pinching.

3 weeks.
Project: Collaborative Group Project(s)
Description:
Students will work in small groups to create artwork for public display in our school. The purpose of doing this is twofold. First, it allows students the opportunity to collaborate with each other in working towards a common goal. Secondly, it will foster a sense of community by creating artwork that will decorate our school’s cafeteria.
Standard(s):
VA.68.F.3.3, Collaborate with peers to complete an art task and develop leadership skills.
VA.68.F.1.2, Use creative risk-taking strategies learned from artists’ works to incorporate artistic solutions in the creation of artwork.
VA.68.F.3.4, Follow directions and complete art tasks in a timely manner to show development of 21st-century skills.
VA.68.H.2.4, Explain the purpose of public art in the community.
Learning Target: Collaborate to create artwork for schoolwide display.
Criteria: Each student will need to follow directions. Use time wisely and stay on task. Contribute to the success of the project.

Quarter 3
Wed/Thurs (1/3-1/4): Finish collaborative projects, hold an informal critique, and hang in the cafeteria.
Project: Wassilly Kandinsky Inspired Assemblage Project
Description: Students will learn about Kandinsky’s ‘Circles painting’ to create abstract sculptures.
Standard(s):
VA.68.C.2.3 Examine artworks to form ideas and criteria by which to judge/assess and inspire personal works and artistic growth.
VA.68.C.3.1 Incorporate accurate art vocabulary during the analysis process to describe the structural elements of art and principals of design.
Learning Target:
•Use assemblage technique and paint to create abstract art.
Criteria:
•Choose a color scheme to incorporate into your project.
•Use assemblage technique to construct an abstract sculpture, using glue and pieces of wood.
•Use acrylic paint to paint concentric circle patterns on the cross-sections of wood.

Length of time:
Approx. 1 to 1 1/2 ½ weeks.
Project: Paper Mache Mask Project
Description: Students will create paper mache masks based on other cultures, time periods, pop culture, or from their own imagination.
Standards:
VA.68.F.3.4 Follow directions and complete art tasks in a timely manner to show development of 21st-century skills.
VA.68.S.2.1 Organize the structural elements of art to achieve artistic goals when producing personal works of art.
VA.68.S.3.1 Use two-dimensional or three-dimensional art materials and tools to understand the potential and limitations of each.
Criteria:
- create paper mache for the framework of the mask
- Paint and decorate with found objects and other materials
- Masks should be three-dimensional and functional.
- Masks should be completely decorated and fully developed.

Project: Paper Clay Bead Project
Description: Students will use paper clay to create lightweight beads. Students will create a variety of forms, color, patterns and textures to their beads. Beads will then be varnished and strung on necklaces. Students may also make earrings as well.
Standards:
VA.68.F.3.4 Follow directions and complete art tasks in a timely manner to show development of 21st-century skills.
VA.68.S.2.1 Organize the structural elements of art to achieve artistic goals when producing personal works of art.

- Create a full beaded necklaces
- Beads must be completely painted and varnished (either matte or glossy)

I understand the severity of what we are all facing at this time and as a result, I am trying to keep this as simple as possible for you. You will only be required to complete one (1) Art Prompt of your choosing for the quarter, found above titled, 3D1 Art Prompts 1-30 (Pdf file), due: April 17th, 2020. I will also provide you with a portfolio review grade based on your work from the start of the year until the end of the 4th quarter. However, should you want to challenge yourself or push yourself further as an artist, I have added additional resources and activity sheets that you can do at your own leisure. Download and choose one (1) drawing prompt from the file named '>>>>***** 3D1 DRAWING PROMPTS 1-30 (PDF) *****<<<<' located above under the Study Guides and Resources. Remember to use the entire paper surface for your composition, think about how you can arrange various elements/objects to make your composition more interesting, add shading, detail, and be as imaginative and creative as you possibly can. You may use a #2 pencil, copy paper (additionally markers, colored pencils, watercolors MAY be used at your discretion along with drawing paper that is at between 8x10 and 9x12 inches. Upon finishing, email me an image of your artwork through either my district or my school email, located above. Please make sure to name each file in the following format (First Last Name, Drawing Prompt #, Class period). I will work to update your grade in Gradebook in a timely manner. Project: Agamograph Project
Standards:

Learning Target: Create a agamograph that incorporates two opposing images seen from two perspectives. Each agamograph MUST include a decorated border. Each piece must be well constructed so as to not easily fall apart with normal handling. Please refer to the Volusia County Visual Arts Rubric.

QTR2 (Week 1):
Project: Radon PSA Poster Contest
Standards:

Learning Target: Create a three dimensional poster (using materials for a collaged and assembled relief) for a poster which communicates to the public the importance of radon testing in homes. Please refer to the Volusia County Visual Arts Rubric.

QTR 2 (Weeks 2-5) - Tunnel Book Project Due:
Description: Students will design and make a tunnel book based a notable poem (i.e. by Frost, Angelou, Twain, Poe, Whitman, etc.). Students will read and design their book based on their own interpretations of the poem. Afterwards, they will research the poem and poet and write a research and reflection paper (I want them to use their own interpretation to design their artwork and then find out what they poet intended to convey afterwards). A tunnel book is like a multidimensional shadow box that can be designed realistically, surrealistic, or even as an abstraction. Tunnel books can be landscape-like (they will have a background, middle ground, and foreground) and have at least 4 layers with a cover as well. Students will be using hot glue guns, scissors, exact-o knives, Elmer's glue, found objects, card stock and various media for adding color and decor.

Learning Target(s) and Criteria: Students should be able to use cutting/construction techniques and processes to create a well constructed tunnel book that does not fall apart when handling it. Tunnel books should be designed in a manner that makes it easy to understand and interpret what the theme or idea being conveyed are. Each Tunnel book must contain at least 4 separate layers with a distinguishable foreground, middle ground, and background. Each tunnel book MUST have a cover. Tunnel books MUST be able to close and open. As always, students should strive to use excellent craftsmanship and all of their creativity to create their tunnel book.
Classroom Activities: Students will view examples of other Tunnel books, some made by other students and some made by professional artists. They will identify what attributes make each of the books an exemplary example of this art form.

Project: Paper Clay Jewelry Making Project
Standards:

Learning Target: Create a functional and permanent piece of jewelry that is visually unified and created with artistic intent.

Project: Foam Carving Clay Tile Mold (individual and class project)

Project: Pinch Pot Project
Description: Students will Make a pinch pot. Students will need to incorporate scoring and pinching techniques to form textures and shape bowls.

Project: Piggy Bank Project
Description: Students will create piggy bank sculptures using the pinch pot technique to form the body.

Project: Chinese Zodiac Animal Project
Description: Students will learn about the Chinese Zodiac Calendar and create a zodiac animal based on their birth year or weather or not they are simply fascinated by that particular animal.

Learning Target(s) and Criteria: Students will create a free standing sculpture that is hollowed and contains an air hole for each enclosed cavity. Sculptures can be in any pose that is associated with their chosen animal.
QTR3 (Week 11):
Project: Community Service Bowl Project
Description: Students will glaze bowls for a service project that serves as a fundraiser for a non profit which serves to feed the homeless and families in need. This project will serve to introduce students to glazing and under glazing prior to working on their own projects.

4th Quarter:
QTR 4 (Weeks 1-2)
Project: Glazing and Underglazing
Description: Students will use this time to glaze pottery and sculptures.

Project: Volusia Rocks Painting Project
Description: Students will create three painted rocks - one for them to keep, one for them to hide in Lake Helen, and one for them to hide in their own hometown. Volusia Rocks is a local art movement that started several years ago as a way for people to spread positivity throughout the community by hiding painted rocks in and around Volusia County. The idea is that people can paint positive messages and/or artwork on rocks and then hide them for others to find. People can go to Volusia Rocks Facebook page and post pictures of the rocks that they find, pass them on to others, or keep them for themselves. This project is designed to not only allow students to practice using acrylic paint and mixing colors, and critically think about design, but it also designed to build character and foster a greater sense of community too.

Description: Students will work in groups to create individual reliefs in the style of modernist, Piet Mondrian. Using black lines of varying thicknesses and rectangles of various shapes and sizes filled with primary colors, students will create relief sculptures that focus on form and shape. Upon completion each group will combine their finished artwork together to make a larger piece unified through line, color, shape, and form, while capturing each student's individual style. The class will engage in a critique of their final pieces on the last day of the project. Each group will have their artwork displayed at our annual artshow.

Description: Students will design and make a tunnel book. A tunnel book is like a multidimensional shadow box. It can be themed, surreal, or even abstract. Tunnel books can be landscape-like (they will have a background, middle ground, and foreground) and have at least 4 layers with a cover as well. Students will be using hot glue guns, scissors, exact-o knives, Elmer's glue, card stock and various media for adding color and decor.

Learning Target(s) and Criteria: Students should be able to use cutting/construction techniques and processes to create a well constructed tunnel book that does not fall apart when handling it. Tunnel books should be designed in a manner that makes it easy to understand and interpret what the theme or idea being conveyed are. Each Tunnel book must contain at least 4 separate layers with a distinguishable foreground, middle ground, and background. Each tunnel book MUST have a cover. Tunnel books MUST be able to close and open. As always, students should strive to use excellent craftsmanship and all of their creativity to create their tunnel book.
Classroom Activities: Students will view examples of other Tunnel books, some made by other students and some made by professional artists. They will identify what attributes make each of the books an exemplary example of this art form.

QTR 4 (Week 5 until 1 week before end of school) - Artist Shrine Shadow Box Group Project) Due: 1 week before end of school
Description: Students will work in groups of two or three to create a shaddow box that pays tribute to a particular artist. Upon finishing, we will decide as a class which ones are the best for each artist and those will be chosen for permanent display within our classroom.

Learning Target(s) and Criteria: Shadow boxes must include an image of the artist, envelope the style of the artist, and contain references to his/her artwork and contributions to art history. Any medium can be used (paint, felt, wire, cardboard, found objects, etc.). They must also be completely decorated on the inside and outside (except the back). Every student is expected to contribute equally (either planning, construction, drawing, etc.).
